Sierra Maestra
Saturday, April 7th @ 8:00 pm
At National Hispanic Cultural Center - Journal Theatre

When the nine friends, all students in various engineering faculties at Havana University, first decided to form a music group, they were thinking of maybe funk or something Brazilian, both so popular at the time. It was the father of the two brothers in the group, Juan de Marcos and Carlos González, who suggested they play son instead. Calling themselves Sierra Maestra after the birthplace of the music in Eastern Cuba, the group quickly found they were on to a big hit. From 1976 onwards they were popular all over the island and their first album in 1980 was an island-wide success. Son was back, after a lull of some 40 years. Having revived it, the group became prize winners in Cuba, and started touring internationally.

Jack is considered a "musician's musician", an uncommonly unique guitarist, a writer of vivid songs with a strong sense of place, and a storyteller in an old Southern tradition who further illustrates each tale with his guitar. Rich Warren of WFMT Chicago's The Midnight Special said, "His artistry is nothing short of amazing." Vic Heyman, in SING OUT!, wrote, "He is one of the strongest guitar players in contemporary folk."

Their first show drew about 20 people, most of them friends. But even from these somewhat humble beginnings, audiences immediately believed they had stumbled onto something special. Enveloping their listeners like family, Karin and Linford kept them close to the fold with simple candle-lit stages and playful handwritten newsletters. But above all else, it was the band's songs that drew in more and more eager fans.
