The Sandra Wong, Dominick Leslie, Ty Burhoe Trio
In Concert and Conversation
Tickets are $16 in advance, $19 day of show (plus a $1 service charge).
Sandra Wong, Dominick Leslie and Ty Burhoe come together in an unusual trio combination of nyckelharpa/fiddle, mandolin and tabla/world percussion to explore music from all corners of the globe, including their own compositions. Having made their trio concert debut at the Caramoor International Music Festival July of 2010, they have been working together for over a year and the project continues to gain both momentum and depth.
Reaching into their individual roots of bluegrass, jazz, Scandinavian, old-time American and both western and Indian classical music, their arrangements honor each tradition while moving into new, uncharted territory. Whether it’s old-time tunes in 7, Bach on nyckelharpa, mandolin and tabla, Swedish tunes from hundreds of years ago brought into a 21st century arrangement or Shakti revisited; Sandra, Dom and Ty create a musical playground for everyone (both musicians and listeners) to explore, play, stretch, and grow in a joyful space.
Sandra Wong: Fiddle and Nyckelharpa; Dominick Leslie: Mandolin; Ty Burhoe: Tabla and world hand percussion.
Sandra Wong wowed everyone as the violin and nyckelharpa player in Jayme Stone's Room of Wonders band that opened for the sold out Maria Muldaur show at the Outpost last year. She started her life journey in upstate New York, displaying a deep love of music as a youngster. She began studying the violin at age seven with the intention of becoming a concert violinist. This remained her sole focus for fifteen years, until she discovered fiddling…and her musical world was turned upside down! Since then, Sandra’s focus with her music has shifted from being an isolated striving for technical perfection to a focus on connecting other people and cultures through music as a way to build community and express our common humanity. Opening this door with an exploration of Irish, Old-time and Bluegrass music, her folk music journey has moved her into her current livelihood of teaching, performing, recording and collaborating with other musicians from a diverse range of musical genres. In 1999, while living in New Mexico, Sandra opened another door when she discovered a 14th century Swedish folk instrument called the nyckelharpa and fell in love. This is a 16 stringed, keyed instrument played with a bow. It has become an integral part of her musical expression.
Ty Burhoe has been a disciple of the great tabla maestro, Ustad Zakir Hussain, since 1990. From that time forward, Ty has been wholly dedicated to music as a career and as a spiritual path. Ty is known for his inspired accompaniment and uplifting presence in both classical and in fusion settings. He is internationally recognized for being instrumental in creating unique collaborations that weave tabla with other world traditions. He has become well known not only for his talents as a tabla player, but also for his extensive experience as a recording and live concert producer. He has been featured on many soundtracks for film and DVD, including the academy award winning documentary, "Born into Brothels."
Colorado native Dominick Leslie has been around live music all his life and thanks to his dad, he has been playing since he was old enough to hold an instrument. He attended his first bluegrass festival at the age of five months and grew up listening to and jamming with his dad’s bluegrass band. At the age of four he acquired a ukulele tuned like the bottom four strings of a guitar and as the years passed Dominick developed a deep passion for music. This love for music was apparent at an early age as Dominick’s abilities progressed rapidly on guitar, fiddle and mandolin. Eventually Dominick switched his focus completely to the mandolin and by the time he was 12, he was writing his own music and practicing every day. Just a few years later at 15, he recorded his first solo CD Signs of Courage which received rave reviews from Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine. In 2004, Dominick became the youngest contestant ever to win the Rockygrass mandolin contest. Since then he has placed first in the Merlefest mandolin contest and second in the Walnut Valley International Mandolin contest. Dominick was also featured in Mike Marshall’s Young American Mandolin Ensemble. This elite group of seven young musicians was invited to perform with Mike at the Mandolines de Lunel festival in France in October 2007. His bluegrass roots have evolved into current interests in jazz, classical and other "world" music, hence his enrollment in the Berklee College of Music in 2008.
The evening will start with a live interview by John and Viv from Art of the Song Creativity Radio, followed by a full concert performance.
