photoThis year, ZoukFest is returning to Santa Fe, but we have had such a good time doing closing concerts that we are going to keep the tradition alive with Irish music masters Mick O’Brien and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh [web site | Amazon.com].  If we are lucky, we'll get some other ZoukFest instructors to drop in and add to the fun.

In 2003, uilleann piper Mick O'Brien and fiddler Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh (pronounced Kwee-veen Oh-Rye-Allah) teamed up to create one of the all-time best loved albums of traditional Irish music. Already regarded as an indispensable classic, Kitty Lie Over contains 15 tracks of mellow and mesmerizing music on uilleann pipes, fiddle and whistles. Their follow-up to that CD, Deadly Buzz, is a worthy successor and shows further subtle innovative development building on the foundation of their earlier release, and Gaelscéal, the National Irish language newspaper, has just named it Album of the Year.

Mick O'Brien plays uilleann pipes, whistle and flute. He performs regularly as a solo artist, with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, and with the Norwegian groups Vamp, Hanne Krogh, and Secret Garden. He has recorded with many artists over the years. His first solo album The May Morning Dew (1996) was received with great critical acclaim. Mick lives in Dublin where he is a schoolteacher.

Dublin born fiddler Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh performs in small, intimate listening venues, creating a sense of magic, and quirky soundscapes where Irish traditional music meets Old-Time fiddling and a Scandinavian feel for sound.
