This psychedelic super-group of somewhat latent Dead fanaticism was born out of a nostalgic whim and has proven to be not only an accurate, heartfelt tribute to the legendary band but a new telling of the Grateful Dead story complete with three part harmony vocals, elongated, far-reaching improvisatory sections, contrapuntal melodic voices, and solid rhythmic structure. Detroit Lightning strives and succeeds to give the audience a genuine Grateful Dead experience, meanwhile presenting it in a totally fresh way unique only to these four talented musicians and their diverse backgrounds.
Ben Wright takes on the difficult task of being a single guitarist playing material that was written for two guitarists. Ben captures the spirit and adventuresome nature of Garcia's solos and has his own twist on that unmistakeable Jerry tone. Josh Martin is a multi-instrumentalist who is tackling the role of the bass in Detroit Lightning. Though Josh has no problem emulating the Phil sound, he gives the band a more grounded, funky edge than the Dead ever had. Paul "Feathericci" Groetzinger has the right backgrounds in Rock, Americana, funk, dance and international music to coalesce the ever changing juggernaut that is Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart with his own driving style. Kevin Zoerning is the perfect man to fill the shoes of the Dead's many great keyboardists over time. He has extensive training in jazz, classical as well as years experience playing just about every genre imaginable.
Ben, Josh and Paul all sing lead and backing vocals. These gentleman play in myriad bands that you may have seen them in before including D Numbers, Mary And Mars, Boris and the Saltlicks, Joe West, Busy McCarroll and the Ambassadors of Pleasure, The Circus Luminous Orchestra and more.
